The ideas and the dates of our Green Activities for the season 2017 are as follows.
TRADITIONAL & LOCAL ACTIVITIES
APRIL 26TH - TRADITIONAL EASTER
Easter in Greece is considered to be the most important religious feast. The culmination of the religious celebrations take place during the Holy Week
MAY 31ST – TRADITIONAL SHEEP SHEARING
Creta Maris Beach Resort offers the opportunity to all guests to experience the local lifestyle through the traditional sheep shearing. The sheep shearing is a big celebration inextricably bound with the farming lifestyle of Crete. It is also called the "feast of sheep" and the purpose is to help sheep not suffering from the heat. It is one of the exciting festivals that take place every year in early summer, in which every farmer invites friends and relatives to help him in this difficult task. This tradition always finishes with a feast.
AUGUST 29TH - THRASHING
Thrashing: One of the most traditional Cretan customs takes place in Creta Maris Beach Resort, making in this way the guests, who are participating, communicants of Cretan customs and tradition. On the day of thrashing, guests are also able to grind grain using the traditional hand-mill, producing thereby flour, which is then used to make bread. All attendees celebrate the end of that day, eating bread and the traditional dishes and appetizers the hotel prepares especially for the occasion.
MAY 1ST - MAY DAY IN CRETA MARIS WITH VOLUNTARY BEACH CLEANING AND COLLECTION OF FLOWERS
May Day is considered as a day symbol for nature. Creta Maris chooses to celebrate in its own eco-friendly way this day. Thus, the resort organizes a special day filled with actions that urge guests to come in contact with nature. The day starts with the beach cleaning, and then guests and employees are informed about the ecosystem of the area, the importance of the beach cleaning and the protection of the environment and get informed about all the actions that are taken by the resort. The next day, a walk in the hotel's gardens is organized, where guests and employees have the opportunity to see the flora of Crete, to gather beautiful flowers and to create colorful garlands in order to decorate the entrances of the resort for the May Day.
MAY 27TH- CLEAN UP THE MED
Each year the awareness campaign Clean Up the Med involves more than 1,500 locations in 21 Mediterranean countries aiming to draw attention on the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea and motivate communities to work together to change the situation. Last year Cleanupthemed involved over 150 participants coordinating istitutions, schools and local civil societies. Different studies have shown that the contamination of the Mediterranean Sea is extremely elevated and the level of plastic waste is beyond critical. For this reason with Clean Up the MED we do not only want to make actions of removing waste but also raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of reducing the pollution released into the sea. In 2017, Clean up the Med was held on the 26th, 27th and 28th May. Thousands of volunteers, from many different countries, speaking different languages and from different cultures and religions will act together to protect their environment by removing tons of waste spoiling the Mediterranean beaches and coastlines as well as the sea bottoms. Creta Maris Beach Resort participates in the campaign on Saturday, May 27th.
JUNE 5TH: WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY – ECOLOGICAL AND ROMANTIC RETURN TO THE OLD CRETE
Ecological and romantic return to the old Crete" Tourism offers new images, cultures and experiences. Combining the Cretan culture and the old Cretan way of living the resort revives one - less "culture" night- passing in all common areas fifteen minutes without light. The lights of candles, the "silence" of culture, and the coastal environment in a more natural background were a separate and parallel ecological experience for our guests. The Creta Maris presents its version of “black out time" event (an event where many countries cease electricity in many places and monuments for ecological reasons).
JUNE 8TH: WORLD OCEAN DAY (SNORKELING)
On the occasion of World Ocean Day, Creta Maris organizes in conjunction with water sports, a wandering on the seabed in front of the hotel.
JUNE 14TH: RECYCLING – OPEN SCHOOL DAY, BEACH CLEANING AND BLUE FLAG’S OFFICIAL AWARD CEREMONY
This day a series of environmental events are performed, in order to enhance public awareness regarding environmental issues. More specifically, Creta Maris celebrates its "Blue Flag" award. Moreover, the Creta Maris Green Team along with students of an Elementary School proceed with beach cleaning while an educational tour on recycling takes place at the premises of the resort. Moreover the children have the possibility to visit Creta Maris’ vegetable garden and to harvest organic vegetables in order to prepare their meal.
JULY 12TH: TREE PRESERVATION
The above mentioned Creta Maris Green Team’s action, with the hotel guests as allies, takes place along the main road of Hersonissos. Dismantling the grass of the road, garbage picking, and whitewashing the trunks of the trees are the activities of the team, which aim at their protection from insects and the sunburn, as well as the removal of garbage from a busy road. The result of this green activity is the contribution of the Creta Maris Green Team to the amelioration of the Hersonissos’ displayed image to tourists and the protection of the environment.

ACTIVITIES IN THE CONTEXT OF FUTOURIS PROGRAM
MAY 23RD: INTERACTIVE SHOW COOKING
An interactive cooking lesson with basic material the leaves of the Cretan Vineyard. The action theme is the Cretan vineyard and its leaves, which form the basis of a very successful Greek recipe, one of the most delicious dishes of our traditional cuisine, “dolmadakia”.
The interactive cooking lesson started from the resort’s garden, where the guests collected the leaves and then transported them to the resort’s organic farm. There, the guests were introduced to the Creta Maris’ Vineyard, learned about the indigenous varieties of the island, the Futouris Program and its goals for a sustainable future of Crete as a wine region and the appropriate way to make “Dolmadakia”.
MAY 18TH: OLIVE OIL TASTING
The guests have the chance to participate in an olive oil tasting in Creta Maris. The tasting takes place at the hotel's archaeological site, surrounded by olive trees, with visitors being informed about the importance of the olive for the Greeks and its role not only in the economy and nutrition, but also in religion, culture, the Olympic Games and in Greeks’ way of living. The guests also have the opportunity to taste olive oil with freshly brewed bread in the wood oven of the farm.
JUNE 29TH: CRETAN VINEYARD CARE
A care of the Cretan vineyard was held in Creta Maris Beach with dozens of participating guests. Via this action the guests came into contact with the Cretan vineyard and learn about the process of planting, taking care of it, as well as the vineyard derivatives. All the attendees are being informed about the Cretan vineyard, the indigenous varieties of Creta Maris Beach Resort vineyard and the Futouris program and its objectives.
AUGUST 18TH: WINE TASTING
The wine tasting is being organized with the cooperation of the winemakers of Futouris program. The participants smell and taste wines of the Cretan vineyard, which are accompanied by traditional Cretan delicacies, while also learn about their special characteristics.
SEPTEMBER 4TH: INTERACTIVE PASTRY LESSON
Creta Maris Beach Resort organizes an interactive confectionery class on grape spoon sweet preparation. The interactive confectionery class starts from the resort’s garden, where the guests, are being informed about the Creta Maris’ Vineyard, learn about the indigenous varieties of the island, the Futouris Program and its goals for a sustainable future of Crete as a wine region and are being informed about the appropriate way to make grape spoon sweet preparation. The guests collect grapes, which then are transported to the resort’s organic farm. The Chef of Creta Maris welcomes the participants in the farm and informs them about the necessary ingredients they need in order to perform the recipe of the grape spoon sweet, the appropriate proportions, the right way of making it, and all the secrets for the ideal bonding of the sweet.
OCTOBER 15TH: OLIVE HARVEST
Creta Maris Beach Resort offers the opportunity to all guests to experience the local lifestyle through the traditional olive harvest, or as Greeks say “Liomazema”. The aim of the action is to introduce the traditional Cretan rural work to the guests, while also highlighting in the best possible way the island’s long tradition in olive harvest. The ritual begins by collecting the olives from the vineyard (harvest), and transfer them in a traditional way, with the donkey, to the place where the production of edible olives is made. In this context, an extensive reference is made to the characteristics of the Cretan olive grove, the way of its treatment and the process of ripening its fruits until the harvest.
