Protecting What Makes Crete Thrive

How biodiversity shapes healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and more meaningful experiences in Crete.

When we speak about protecting nature, biodiversity is often one of the first words that comes to mind. Yet beyond the term itself lies something deeply tangible: the delicate balance that allows ecosystems, communities, and everyday life to flourish.

Biodiversity is the rich variety of life that surrounds us: from pollinators moving quietly between flowers, to the microorganisms that keep soil fertile, to native plants that have adapted to thrive within their natural environment. Each species, no matter how small, plays a role in maintaining balance.

And today, protecting that balance has never been more important.

Why Islands Like Crete Matter

As climate patterns shift, natural resources become increasingly precious, and food systems face growing pressure, healthy ecosystems are proving to be one of our greatest forms of resilience.

For islands such as Crete, where land, sea, climate, and culture are deeply interconnected, biodiversity carries even greater significance. Protecting local ecosystems means protecting traditions, agriculture, gastronomy, and the landscapes that define the island itself.

From Soil to Table

At Creta Maris Resort, biodiversity forms part of a wider commitment to regenerative hospitality.

Across the Resort’s gardens, certified organic regenerative agriculture practices are applied across 19.2 stremmas of land, supporting healthy soils, reducing water use, and allowing nature to regenerate through carefully protected non-intervention zones.

Seasonal herbs, fruits, and vegetables are cultivated without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, using native varieties selected to work in harmony with Crete’s climate.

Freshly harvested produce then finds its way into the Resort’s kitchens, connecting the gardens directly to the guest experience.

Protecting More Than the Gardens

Biodiversity extends beyond the soil.

Through its Costa Nostrum Sustainable Beaches certification, the Resort also supports responsible coastal management and the protection of marine and coastal biodiversity.

Pollinator-friendly habitats, composting practices, regenerative planting methods, and educational experiences further strengthen this connection between nature, hospitality, and everyday life.

A Responsibility That Continues to Grow

Because when nature thrives, everything connected to it thrives too, making every stay an opportunity to stay with purpose.

Healthier soils create better harvests. Better harvests support stronger food systems. Stronger food systems support local communities.

And together, they create experiences that feel more authentic, more connected, and more meaningful.

Because nature is not simply something we admire.

It is our greatest partner.
